What do you buy someone who has everything?

Pure Art is the easy answer to that question. But where does one begin. You can go for painting to hang on the wall, but everybody has at least one or a dozen of those, few on the other hand, have figurative art. This can be really exciting and a memory for life. Be involved in the design of a sculpture and active in the whole process as I make of for you. Click the button below to read about the whole process.

Wooden people sculpture with mixed wood species in Realism makes for a real Contemporary sculpture.

A small wooden figurative sculpture made from wood by Ingrained Culture.

Here you can see the use of varied British wood species in the composition, that add depth and colour to the natural qualities of wooden people sculpture.

Accurate representations of real people,  with a sense of real life and warmth and all in wooden people.

  • What is figurative art?

The simple answer is a sculpture of a human being.  Robert at Ingrained Culture likes to make figurative sculpture that is life like, show warmth and feeling.

  • Are statues out of date?

If you mean those stuffy bronze inert figures, standing on plinths and staring into space, then I think statues are old fashioned and out of date.

  • Can I have a modern alternative to a statue?

Yes, have a wooden person, showing signs of real and modern life. Ordinary people like you and me work best in our contemporary culture. You don't need to choose a super human, although I can make one those too.

  • Do you cover the whole UK?

Ingrained Culture is based in South Ayrshire, Scotland, we use a specialist carrier who will deliver UK wide.

  • Can I be involved in the design?

Yes, Robert positively encourages his clients to be fully involved in the design process. If you have already decided exactly what you want, as an artificer, Robert will even make your design - no problem.

Wooden people are made for inside dramas, or suitable for permanent outside installations.

How much does a figurative sculpture cost?

Table top figures start from £550. Small scale figures start from £1500 and a life size adult figure built from larch, will cost from £7000.

Fully consultative design process included within the price. Video design consultations also included. I can make your design, or I can offer you my designs to consider, or we can design it together - no problem.

Perhaps, you would like a sculpture to be really NOW, I try very hard to reflect current thinking, contemporary life and values in all my work.

Points to consider:

  • Are you concerned with the climate crisis, sustainability and environmental responsibility?
  • Have you decided where the sculpture is to be installed - can I have a few photos?
  • Do you want your piece to be about drama, soothing, nature, love, erotic, exotic, shocking?
  • Do you want it to passively convey a message i.e. emotions, pain, love, loss, gain wealth, success?
  • Is it to be high brow, folklore, classical, modernist or a memorial?
  • How large or small, almost anything is possible and small can be as effective as large.

Life like, warm wooden people.

I think you can only replicate real life by using wood.

These figures are handmade to order, everyone is individually designed with full client consultation and they are made to either live permanently outside in all weathers or inside a building. Highly suitable for those concerned with climate change.

How to make an enquiry?

The system is relaxed and easy. All you have to do is complete the form below, give me a brief description of what you have in mind, and I'll guide you through the process. You will NOT have any obligation until you decide to place an order. Before the ordering stage, you will receive a fixed quotation from me, so there will be clarity from the start. When the piece is finished and before it leaves my workshop, you will have the chance to either come and see it or view photographs I'll send you, to decide whether it meets your expectations and whether to buy it or not - simple as that.

Life size figurative sculpture can be one of the most effective tools to bring out an emotional response from people. Well thought out Life size figures can portray a passive message of welcome to your friends, family or visiting clients.

You can ornament homes, offices or public buildings with images of today's society and the values that you hold dear.

I think little else touches the public more convincingly than realistic figurative pieces. It's probably because we can all (regardless of background or our place in society) associate with a representation of human life.

Longevity

The choice of wood is of course the critical factor when it comes to how long the piece will last. The two figures pictured above are made from larch. Larch is commonly used in boat building and for farm fencing. Larch heartwood is classified as 'Semi-durable' by the Timber Research and Development Association.

When constructing a figurative piece and using the two figures above as an example, I laminate Larch boards together using the world-renowned WEST SYSTEM epoxy. Once the rough figures are whole, a long period of hand carving takes place to sculpt the rough objects into people. Each piece is then treated with a wood preserver, encapsulated in WEST SYSTEM Marine Grade Epoxy and varnished with a polyurethane varnish. With simple and occasional maintenance, the piece should last for decades. All my work is repairable in the future and potentially can last for several decades. More information can be found on the Eco Policy page of this web site.

Alternatively, you might decide not to have the external coatings added and leave the natural weathering and deterioration to take its own course. Many would see this as a process in art in its own right.

Other woods such as oak require no treatment at all, it will slowly turn black, it may split and weather and add to the overall effect. Oak may last a century or more.
