How to choose the subject for an exquisite wooden garden sculpture.
The best starting point is to decide, what subject will make you smile every time you look at it. Then simply tell me Robert, and I shall guide you through the rest. You may be a garden owner or garden designer, either way you'll have a passion for design and commissioning a sculpture for the garden, isn't easy, there's a lot riding on it. Perhaps, you would like a sculpture to be really NOW. As an artificer, I positively encourage your design ideas. I can make your design or we can design it together.
Points to consider:
- The whole garden, what is its aim?
- Do you have a theme in mind i.e. abstract, animal, insect, human figure life like or fictitious?
- Have you decided where the sculpture is to be installed - can I have a few photos?
- Do you want your piece to be about drama, soothing, nature, love, erotic, exotic, shocking?
- Do you want it to passively convey a message i.e. emotions, pain, love, loss, gain wealth, success?
- Is it to be high brow, folklore, classical, modernist or a memorial?
- How large or small, almost anything is possible and small can be as effective as large.

So what's different, what's new and now about my work?
It's largely about today's society, my sculpture is made from British grown 100% legal and sustainable wood. It's not just any wood, it consists of carefully chosen species, careful use of specialist techniques, heavily built and robust. For pieces that will be installed in the open and unprotected from all weathers, I coat the whole piece in a marine grade coating for extended longevity. The end result is a natural appearance and an air of real life, something only obtainable by using wood.
Why do I use wood and not bronze in my sculpture?
Wood is of course natural, but it is the only medium in my opinion that conveys a feeling of real life, when the sun shines it will warm and feel warm to the touch. This sense of life is especially important when making a sculpture of a person, bird or animal. Bronze was right for the Victorian period of industrialisation and Gothic splendour, concrete and steel were right for the modernist period of brutal architecture and science fiction, but today, the use of these (and other high carbon materials) are simply all out of date and some may even say irresponsible. It is fair to say the use of bronze, steel, iron or concrete, will last longer than wood and require no maintenance, so it comes down to what your priorities are.
Medium plus example

Contemporary wooden figurative sculpture.
This life size figurative sculpture was made from a single photograph. You may like to consider an Eco-friendly wooden figurative sculpture from your own family or simply your imagination.
Design your own garden sculpture.
This life size sculpture of a Kiwi Bird standing on a fern leaf, was entirely the idea of my client. The design was achieved through a consultative video design process where I advised on the practicalities, but essentially the whole concept and pose etc belongs to my client.
Gardens all over the world have been ornamented by art & sculpture
I guess for as long as there have been gardens, they have been ornamented. When we first think of garden sculpture, we either bring to mind the classical figures of ancient Greece or the ubiquitous garden gnome. The gnome has a place, and if you would like a wooden one, I'll make it for you, but I like to make individual one off pieces that have meaning and fit their locations and surrounding environment, but it goes much deeper than that. If you're looking for a sculpture to draw on the emotions, in my experience, a human figure can do that best. Wooden figures, have an air of real life about them, unlike bronze that is just dead metal.
