What is the typical process for commissioning a bespoke house or business sign, from idea to installation?

It starts simply: send Robert an email or complete our contact form. A rough sketch or just a detailed description of your idea is a perfect starting point.

Robert will guide you via email and personal video updates as the design matures. Crucially, as the design evolves, you receive a price for every option. When your sign or sculpture is fully finished, Robert will send you a final video update . If you view the finished piece and decide it does not meet your expectations, you are under no obligation to buy it. For pieces with a deposit, this will be promptly returned. A handmade Art Deco wooden personalised house sign.

We exclusively use British Grown in Britain timber, with Larch being our wood of choice for its exceptional durability and natural resistance to the elements. While Oak is often offered by others, we find Larch holds its integrity better in the UK weather, avoiding the common grey discolouration and splitting that can occur with Oak. All our wood is selected for its inherent strength and treated to ensure longevity, beautifully withstanding the diverse British climate.

The personalisation process is designed to be collaborative and enjoyable. You can choose any font style, and we offer options for text colour but black often works best.. Beyond text, we can incorporate hand-painted illustrations of any subject. 2D animal or pet portraits, or even sculpted elements to create a truly unique piece that reflects your personality or a special place. Our complimentary design service ensures your vision is brought to life, with proofs provided for your approval. You will be fully involved and take the lead in the design process. There are no software constraints, because Robert is an artist and he draws, paints and sculpts by hand and eye alone, i.e. unaided by computer.

3. How durable are your wooden house signs, and what maintenance do they require?

Our personalised wooden house signs are crafted for exceptional durability. We use a variety of techniques to mitigate against warping and our signs are heavily made and robust. That said, please remember that all natural wood is exactly that, natural and the natural process is to slowly degrade over time But, we offer a range of finishes from natural wax through to encapsulation in epoxy resin. High Quality oils, yacht varnishes and enamels if painted, to seal against the weather. You can choose either not to maintain the finish and allow your sign to weather which is seen by some to be an arty process in itself or carry out light maintenance to extend the pristine look of your house sign.

4. How are the signs installed, and do they come with fixings?

We make installation as straightforward as possible. For wall or fence hung signs, your sign will come with discreet fixings for easy diy installation. We never recommend drilling holes through signs for installation. We can also provide free standing signs with posts and fixing battens, often tailored to your specific requirements.

5. What size should my wooden house sign be for optimal visibility?

For your house name or number to be easily legible from a distance, we recommend a minimum text height of 50mm. To truly make an impact and ensure your sign is noticeable and well-designed, the overall height of the wooden house sign should ideally be a minimum of 250mm. For designs incorporating illustrations, we often create signs with a width of approximately 1 meter to provide ample space for artistic detail.

Support with bereavement

I do make memorial portrait sculpture, but also almost anything your imagination can suggest is good for personal memorials.

Many, of us will suffer bereavement at least once during our life time.

I'm not a therapist and so I do not offer advice on bereavement, but I may be able to help and I wonder if you have considered a private memorial?

What is a personal Memorial?

This blog is connected to my business as a maker of personal memorials. So, what is a private or personal memorial? Well, it's either a sculpture or a panel you can have in your own garden or inside your home.

Why do people want private memorials?

Of course cremations mean no grave, those left to grieve often don't realise until much later, that not having a place to visit can be unsettling for them and visiting a spot where ashes were spread isn't always satisfactory. Even natural burial grounds don't usually have marked graves, and many who grieve need a place to visit and contemplate their loss.

Where is the benefit in a personal memorial?

So, imagine a discreet beautiful sculpture of real meaning to you, or a 2D panel rather like a plaque but larger and way better, located either in your own back garden or even, say, the dining room. Now, during a difficult time or a quiet moment, your personal memorial is conveniently placed to quickly sit down and take a few moments to evaluate your thoughts and emotions. A place where there are comfortable reminiscences.

Isn't a personal memorial a bit morbid?

That's where good design comes in, because no they don't need to be morbid, I think a well designed memorial should give you comfort and strength.

Are memorials shrines?

This is a personal choice. In my experience my clients have one thing in common, they're suffering bereavement, but it manifests itself differently in everyone. Some do want to create an elegant shrine (religious or not) but others have commissioned a piece that is not overtly a memorial at all.

In fact, any one else may look at the piece and have no idea at all that it is anything other than art. So, you can choose to tell your family or friends the real meaning of that sculpture in your garden – or not.

How do I go about commissioning a personal memorial?

I'll ask you for your written thoughts and emotions, all about your memories of the person you've lost, their interests and how your lives worked together. We shall work through various design ideas to translate all of that into either a 3D sculpture or a 2D illustrated panel. Often text works well and can be very thought provoking. In the end, you shall end up with a piece of your own design to help your own grief in your own home or garden.

Public Art Gourdon Aberdeenshire

Environmentally Responsible Public Art - Gourdon.

Seaview Community Park, Gourdon Aberdeenshire is, as the name implies, run by a community group, a group of enthusiastic proactive friends and neighbours, who have created an attractive environment for all generations of their village to gather and enjoy the open space. Robert of Ingrained Culture has been commissioned to make various sculptures for Seaview Community Park, the latest piece 'A Wave To Our Past' was installed this week.

The piece, as you can see from the photos, is a contemporary wave shape that Robert designed and built entirely by hand and eye alone, and the extensive carved text, focuses on the human heritage of Gourdon. It speaks about the men and women involved in herring fishing, the Selbie Works flax spinning mill and invites people of today to enjoy the Park. It's a truly collaborative piece, there is a poem by Celia Craig especially commissioned for this piece, and all the other text and the piece's name is the work of Robert's client - J.M. & L.S.

In common with all work from Ingrained Culture, 'A Wave To Our Past' is made exclusively from 100% legal and sustainable Scottish grown wood, and its manufacture has one of the lowest possible carbon foot prints. I have developed many different techniques to make wooden sculpture like this, suitable for permanent outside installation. All my work is about Climate Crisis mitigation.

Bella the seal pup.

Bella the seal pup is a life size sculpture in realism. If you look closely, you can see she has 'blonde' and darker aspects to her skin colouring as in real life. This has been achieved by mixing wood species, I have used Scottish Larch for the darker colour and Scots Pine for the blonder parts. Bella has an all weather coating to make her suitable for permanent outside installation. There is a reason why my clients have named her Bella, and all will become clear........

Climate Currency - emerges this summer.

Following a worldwide open call, Robert's work was accepted by the 'The Climate Action and Visual Culture Team' at Huddersfield University.

Dr. Rowan Bailey interprets Robert's work as follows:

'In relation to data and numeric scales of quantification and

statistical change, Robert Lawrence plays with the concept

of climate currency in a project with the charity Reforesting

Scotland. Lawrence has generated wooden sculptural

currency with his use of Scottish grown wood. As eco low

carbon alternatives they help us to question the materiality

of currency.7 The wooden coins are also multipurpose

serving as coasters for private dining tables, board rooms,

meeting rooms, cafes and restaurants. Strangely they evoke

a use and surplus value all in one. They are also part of a

re-planting chain, so that with each climate currency coin

sold, a tree is planted. Tree planting will begin in 2021, using

local tree stakes and environmentally sound tree protection.

This includes planting native hardwoods, creating well

managed woodlands, with selected species. This is the

magical value of the Climate Currency™ project. The more

wooden coins that are bought, and not used as part of an

exchange economy, the more trees are planted. This provokes

us to think about how currencies might be used to help

with the climate agenda in terms of the redistribution and

investment of value into material resources. So, in a way,

instead of extraction and depletion, words so commonly

used with de-forestation practices, we might start to

consider species development and native planting as

part of the growing of a new infrastructure for the future.

The wooden coins thus serve as ornaments to a cause

rather than tools in a surplus engine chain.'
